SHAWNYA MICHAELS
Senior Director of Cancer Discovery

Ms. Michaels heads our discovery research efforts in cancer. She has twelve years of experience in the Pharmaceutical Industry. Having worked with Dr. Brown in the Discovery Dept at Matrix Pharmaceutical Inc, Shawnya was the first employee of ChemGenex Therapeutics Inc when Dr. Brown founded it in 1999. She received a bachelor’s degree in Neurobiology from UC Berkeley in 1985 and also spent seven years in the Ocular Oncology Dept at UC San Francisco where the focus of her research was on developing new diagnostic and treatment procedures for patients with eye tumors. An expert in the development and use of animal and cell culture models to screen for anticancer agents, Shawnya does all her own formulation and experimental design work. Shawnya has significant experience in the drafting of patent applications as well as supporting IND applications with preclinical data.
